From what I've gathered, Springfield had a mismatch of 2001s, 612s, Thunderbolts, SD-10s and a variety of Model X sirens. In 2006 they were all professionally restored and repainted and reinstalled. I believe it was only a year or two after that they got a Federal grant to buy all new T-128's. Funny...

I guess at some point in its life on that tower it got struck by lightning directly. That lightning caused the telephone relay , which controls the siren, to switch on and off rapidly which thus had the same effect on the motor starter and pitted out the contact points.
