Essex (UK) flood warning sirens - lots of pictures

Essex County Council operate a flood warning network of 36 sirens. This document on their web site gives plenty of information on the system including how the sirens are activated and their locations: http://www.essexcc.gov.uk/vip8/ecc/ECCWebsite/content/binaries/documents/FloodPlanVersion1.doc?chan...

Hi Dan,

Your siren looks bigger than our Castle Castings one which has a 15" diameter stator. How big is it?

Thanks

Thanks for posting that. It was also good to see the French siren videos. I'd seen the sirens on trips to France but I never knew they tested them regularly until I saw your posts. I have one picture of a French siren that I took on a holiday probably about 20 years ago. I have no idea even roughly ...

Hi there, It seems there are quite a few of us that have (or had) Castle Castings or similar sirens. Did you take any pictures of yours? This is mine (and my brother's - we paid half each). Maybe It'll get restored one day... http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l28/AndrewPollard/IMGP0908.jpg I remembe...

Thanks!

That picture might be a bit deceptive. I took it at the start of August and it was actually really hot!

The things on the rotors are heating elements that stop the siren icing up - actually I think they're junction boxes for the heating elements. Usually they are at the bottom but here they seem to be on the top. Maybe we should post our most artistic pictures! I came across two sirens right next to e...

Just for completeness, I went back to Hampton yesterday to get new some pictures of the siren on the waterworks. It's so hard to see that for a long time, I wasn't even sure it was a siren. These pictures show about the best views I could find. http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l28/AndrewPollard/IMG...

Some excellent pictures there. I particularly like the French sirens. You've reminded me - I spotted a siren in Prague near the cathedral. I think it's the same as one of the ones in your album. http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l28/AndrewPollard/Picture272.jpg And thanks for the directions. I'll fo...

Hi there, Can any of the sirens be seen from outside the dockyard? I'd be interested to have a look next time we're in Portsmouth. I remember in the days before the civil defence sirens were scrapped, Portsmouth was one of the best cities to find sirens. Once when visiting friends, I saw an old Cart...
