Where are LA?s Cold War sirens?

Radio Station KCRW in Los Angeles recently did a story on the abandoned air raid sirens in Los Angeles. I was honored to be a part of that story. Thanks to Saul Gonzalez for doing the story. Here is a link to their blog: http://blogs.kcrw.com/whichwayla/2012/10/where-are-las-cold-war-sirens/ LA Curb...

Yet Another L.A. Siren Bites The Dust

On or about July 9, 2009, Siren 214 fell victim to a new Lowe's Home Improvement Center, near the 118 Freeway and San Fernando Road in Pacoima. I've been watching this one for a while, but it first looked like it was far enough away from the parking lot to be in jeopardy. This morning it was gone. A...

There are about 170 sirens still remaining all around Los Angeles, even though they've been out of service for a couple of decades or more. I know of a great web site that has pictures and a map of where all the ones that are remaining that were operated by the City of Los Angeles, if that will help...

Another L.A. Siren Bites The Dust

I'm sad to report that Los Angeles siren #27 at Van Ness and Fernwood in Hollywood has been removed. There has been heavy construction adjacent to it, which seems to be a death wish to these things around here. I did a drive-by Sunday on a hunch, to check on it, and yes, it's history. I don't know e...

Does this SD affodil -10 operate? Or is it now merely a sculpture? None of the City of Los Angeles sirens are operational. Up until recently, only two of the remaining ones had the power lines still connected (#206 & #179). Since I had noted that on my web site, #206 has been disconnectd! Maybe...

Yes there is! The modification cost $20,000, certainly making it the most expensive siren in the city. I guess someone felt they better put it somewhere rather than scrap it out when construction displaced it. I took some pictures of it in it's new home a while back, and just got around to posting t...

I am happy to report that as of Sunday morning 11/25/07, the siren mentioned by Charles (#141) IS STILL THERE! It is easy to miss, especially when traveling east on Sunset Blvd. Dennis I think LA may have lost another 500T recently :( I drove along Sunset Blvd from PCH to Westwood on Tuesday evening...
