The only mechanical vehicle siren produced by Federal is the Q2B. The old models are only available used, if you can find them. BTW, here's a picture of the 28. http://www.sirenman.com/complete/s21.jpg Some FDNY apparatus still have these-- they moved them from unit to unit as their apparatus was re...

Why is this page so wide that one must horizontal scroll to read it? Other pages are not too wide. It is due to the picture being too large. Pictures can be shrunk down with the appropriate software before posting them on whatever site is hosting them. Then, when they're linked to this BB they'll f...

Thanks for posting those clips. I've always wanted to hear the Executer and the EQ2B in a "real" setting, not just the manufacturer's sound clips that have circulated around for a while. I believe that the last truck out in the last video clip has the EQ2B-- you're right, it is a lot highe...

What is really needed is some kind of *federal* standard (I'm talking the Government here, not Federal Signal :-) ) for emergency vehicle lighting. What is confusing are all of the different state laws on the matter of lighting color and other requirements (like CA's steady burn to the front/flashin...

I worked on a Cadillac ambulance once (yes, folks, I'm older than dirt; some of our patients were Cro-Magnons) and the headlights dimmed each time the Dietz mechanical siren kicked off. Me too! We had a Federal Q2B on one of our ambulances back in the mid 70's (all caddies) in Cherry Hill, NJ. The ...

There is a Whelen dual tone siren on one of the ambulances in the district I work in as a paramedic in Eastern Long Island, NY. They just got it a few months ago. While it's not a mechanical siren, I have been impressed with the street clearing ability that it affords. I believe the lower pitch of t...

In New York the Vehicle and Traffic rules clearly state the candle power allotted to Volunteers. It's something ridiculously low, like 30 CP(read: Christmas Tree Lightbulb!) I'll see if I can dig it up; I've read it many times over the years. The visibility level in terms of feet that Robert refers ...
