I think the OP had an interesting question. I hadn't really thought about the use of sirens before the world wars.

I can hear the town FD's STH-10 from about 4.5 miles away across hills and trees.

I'm always amazed to see sirens kludged together like that. I guess I'm fortunate to live somewhere that has funding available to repair or replace broken sirens.

The use of the Chevy engine was probably due to availability of the engine and replacement parts, cost etc. etc. If I ever get my hands on an engine-less Chrysler siren , its going to end up being Ford powered because that's what I know best. Now all I can think about is doing an LS swap for a dead...
