My area, Peoria, IL doesn't normally test their fire sirens, so what I do is ride my bike to a nearby fire house and wait for the tones to start up, then I start my camera up.

For me it's any day of the week, but the best time to get out and record is definitely summer time. This year I have three field days, as I like to call them, to go out and record (weather permitting).

I would suggest browsing this forum for Michigan siren locations. Please keep in mind I have not checked any of the Michigan maps, so I don't know what you can expect.

Ribbon cables have a tendency to short out. Every student at my school has a MacBook, and the hard drives are connected via ribbon cable and normally when the hard drives crash it's because the ribbon cable shorted out. Don't get me wrong, I think ribbon cable is great, but it could be a little thic...
