Re: How do I get the bottom part of the motor off my STH-10

I wonder how many STH/STL-10 siren motors look like that inside considering the motor is top-mounted. Any idea how old the siren is? I wonder if the weather seals wore out or if it was serviced in the past and not sealed back up properly. It all looks like surface rust to me. To be safe, I'd take it...

Re: Help dating my model 2

I'm going to measure the inrush when I get this all sorted out. 25A seems optimistic if I'm honest because I haven't blown any breakers yet. I've seen a few Model 2 owners on YouTube just plug their single-phase 120V units into what looks like a 15A power outlet. That's why the 25A rating surprised...

Re: Help dating my model 2

Nice siren! I'm happy to see it still runs. Maybe someday there will be a single-phase Model 2 in my life, though I had no idea the old Model 2s drew 25 amps at full load! Are even the modern ones like that?

Re: Skateville Siren

It makes me think of old Ritter Arena at RIT - they had some kind of siren in there too, an actual siren and not something played over the speakers! Gosh, I wish I asked about the thing while I was working in campus FMS >_<

M48? Huh that's interesting. Does the ID plate name it as an M48?
Probably. Caledonia FD in NY used to have a Sterling that had a model number of "M45" on its tag. Based on what @SunshineStateSirens said, that means it's a Sterling Model M siren built in 1945.

Re: how old are most federal signal model 5/7s?

I'm pretty sure the Model 2 is the oldest siren design still in production.

I believe my Model 5 was built sometime in the early 1950s when Federal Signal was still called Federal Enterprise.

Re: slivery sirens

...The paint used on those sirens is probably "barn paint" at least that is what I have heard it referred to by the farmers and ranchers that swear by it. From what I have been made to understand, barn paint (not its real name) has some sort of metal? as part of the paint mix that makes i...

Re: How were gas/engine powered sirens operated?

I can't speak for the Chrysler Air Raid Sirens, but can on Mobil Directos Mobil Directos could be ordered with various degrees of automation. Now by automation we mean totally electro-mechanical means. Mine was not equipped with any sort of of remote start capabilities. It was roof mounted, so I im...

Re: Advice on how to transport a sterling

When I picked up my Model 5, it was me and three other guys lifting it into the back of a pick-up truck. We used load straps to secure it. For reference, the Model 5 weighs about 300 lbs. I had no idea a Sterling M-5 was that heavy! Depending on how much time and money you have for prep, there are h...
