La Crescent MN Sentry 10V Siren Failure

Wed Aug 07, 2019 10:00 pm

I was excited to see the La Crescent, MN Sentry 10V siren for the monthly test. The last time this siren was recorded was in 2012. I wanted to get over to La Crescent and record this, as it was the first Sentry 10V that I have ever heard in person and recorded. The tones came in, and the siren did not activate. The other 2001 went off. You can hear in the video a hum going on and off because this siren does the ATTACK signal. So something with the chopper could be jammed. I think that this Sentry replaced and ACA Hurricane. It looks like it has the same metal plate that the Hurricane's blower would go on. It looks like that they did not take everything off the pole.

That's really odd, this unit looks fairly recent... Wonder what happened to it in-between the last time it was recorded going off and today.

I personally cannot hear the mains humming that it's emitting, so yeah, it's very likely that the rotor or motor has somehow seized up.

The Humming is the Motor Controller

Yes, I don't know what happened to it because it can't be more than 25 years old. I thought if that was the motor was humming it would blow a fuse or have a thermal protection mechanism that would prevent it from burning up. I was probably a motor starter or some power source making the humming noise.
