These were 8-port, 3,500 RPM sirens that sound like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pF1dYEwHY0
Is the motor smoking?

Yep, the motors used on these were apparently known for overheating quite a lot.

I am pretty sure this is a Model 1, or some other siren, and the location of the siren is in Kansasville, Wisconsin.

It's a single phase Federal Model 5/7 that someone's been creative with. It's an old one as well given it has that motor service door at the bottom. Here's a recording:

Clayton Werden posted recently on the Facebook group about a siren he was servicing that looked very similar to that. It ended up being a fedelcode model 5QC. Apparently Federal Signal didn't even know it existed. I wonder if your siren is similar.

I too found out about that siren when Werden posted it up in social media, but:
The OP's siren is extensively modified. The main tube of the housing is the same length as that of a normal Model 7. It's also an early Federal with the less sharply angled louver/shield/sound deflector thingies, and the ones on the Fedelcode are all equally spaced apart.
The possibility is there, but I would say it's more like a common-or-garden 5 that someone's modified for X reason.

They had to be replaced, because the brushes got smushed until they were a small black stain.

No wonder it sounded like horse excrement.

Were there previous videos of it going off?
