Siren photos from the Oregon and northern California coast (large photos!)

Thu Jul 09, 2015 7:22 pm

On my drive up the coast a couple of weeks ago, I took a few iPhone shots of sirens along the way. I also recorded tests in San Francisco and Bandon which I'll post later.

Stinson Beach, California - Federal Eclipse. At the base of it is a restaurant called "The Siren."
Image

Mendocino, California - STL-10 on fire station
Image

Crescent City, California - STH-10 at harbor. There was originally a 2T22 here, and later an actual Hörmann E-57, which according to a city worker I talked to, was junked several years ago.
Image

Crescent City, California - A non-rotating 9/12 Allertor on the roof of a city building.
Image

Crescent City, California - An abandoned, hornless, single-toned Thunderbolt 1000 on the next roof over from the Allertor (center of photo).
Image

Brookings, Oregon - Model 2 and fire horns at city hall.
Image

Pistol River, Oregon - STL-10 at fire station with another one on the ground.
Image

Gold Beach, Oregon - Model 3? (the southernmost of their three sirens).
Image

Gold Beach, Oregon - 8-port Sentry something at the fire station.
Image

Gold Beach, Oregon - Model 3 or 5 inside a square housing at the north end of town.
Image

Ophir, Oregon - STL-10 at Moolack Beach
Image

Bandon, Oregon - ATI "siren" over city hall, next to pole that once held a Model 5.
Image

Millington, Oregon - Buell horns on fire station. This is just south of Coos Bay, where the diaphone and North Bend's Defender have both been removed. The diaphone may be concealed in the tower of the new fire station.
Image

North Bend, Oregon - Fire alarm siren on old outbuilding behind high school. These were common in older Oregon schools.
Image

Reedsport, Oregon - Modulator tsunami siren.
Image

Reedsport, Oregon - Model 5 fire siren a block away from the Modulator (Reedsport has two Modulators and two Model 5's).
Image

Gardiner, Oregon - Modulator and HOR "paint can" siren at fire station (the DSA at the mill across the street is gone, as is the mill).
Image

Gardiner, Oregon - Closer view of HOR siren.
Image

Florence, Oregon - Drawbridge siren. Most coastal drawbridges use Model A-type sirens for stopping traffic.
Image

Florence, Oregon - STH-10 on hill over downtown area.
Image

Yachats, Oregon - Model 5 on fire station. If you're wondering, it is pronounced "Yaw-hots."
Image

Waldport, Oregon - Whelen something at fire station - the only siren remaining in Waldport.

Nice pictures! Definitely picked up a few gems.
So North Bend had a Sentry Defender at one point in time?

It was labeled Edwards, but it was clearly a Defender. It has been removed and not replaced.

Its not an OA-1. There's two cells. OAs are based on the 2900. The Vortex-O series was based on the 2800. So if its a non-voice siren its a Vortex-O 2.

Good pics! I guess there are 3 pole mounted stl-10s in Oregon and 2 on the ground now. I got a walking tour video of the whelen in waldport but I don't think I uploaded it due to wind noise and the fact that it hasn't ever gone off when I have been there. The ATIs in sfo seem like they get decently taken care of but those Brandon ones seem like they are gone. The model A fire alarm was cool to look at as was the ones on the bridge in Florence. Florence is mostly modulator and the Sth-10 may or may not be used anymore. Too bad the E57 and the 3T22 were thrown out... Thanks for sharing.

I thought vortex applied only to the rotational sirens, not the omnidirectional ones?

Not always. Vortex-O was, as mentioned, the 2800 series equivalent of today's OmniAlerts. They appear to have changed the name when the 2900s came out. See here for an example: http://www.safetycom.com/pdfs/vortex/VORTEXO4_PB.pdf
Don't wait. Take a siren photo today.

Maybe mister Dennis Clark the whelen man can solve this.

Great pictures. That Model 5 in Reedsport looks like it's been restored. It's an interesting situation. Matt has a video of an OmniAlert with a Type I box and an ESC-864 panel that had 5 amps coupled to a 2805 head. The panel in that video does not look like the ones that Ive seen.
