Well a Whelen vortex R4 can easily cover 3 miles at an audiable level, probably even 4 miles at about 40 dB. Whats is the maxium range of a electomechenical siren? I personally know that the whelen can cover over 3 miles because i've been over 3 miles away from one and heard it recognizibly when it was oscillated towards my location.

The electromechanical siren that gives the most range would be the ASC T-135. According to ASC, it covers 9 square miles and is equivalent to four 127 dB sirens.

I've been 6 miles away from a T-135 when it's sounded and I could hear it pretty well.

I just know that all the places that I've been that have electronic sirens, the installations are much closer together. Like a half a mile apart. We're talking WPS 2810s too. Collierville, TN has WPS 2790s (installed in the late 90s) and theirs are very close together as well.

To make it clear, I don't dislike electronic sirens (except ATIs, if they still make those). I'd choose the WPS 2900 before anything else. I love the new low tone of the Whelens.

The reason why electronic sirens are placed so much closer to each-other is because of the wave they produce. Even though they might have the same Decibel-rating at a hundred feet way from themselves as some mechanical types, that won't matter allot once the sound travels a considerable distance from the siren. It is a similar principle to the sound-pushing difference between a T-128 and the 2001 series; even though they're both rated at a-hundred-twenty-eight Decibels from themselves, the T-128 can be heard farther than the 2001 series. So, the only reason why sirens so diverse between themselves in terms of sound type are the at the same sound-pressure at a particular distance is because of the amount of force sent through the air; anywhere out of the siren's effect on the sound, environmental conditions will start to take over. And mechanical siren types also produce square or triangular waves, while electronic sirens produce a sine wave, which is much less penetrative.

God that thing is loud, and it is only operating with 3 speaker drivers. Here in Montgomery they have upgraded the system to Wps-4004. They are very loud but it is the P.A that will blow you away! I would to love to hear the rare WPS-4008..i dont think anyone has a recording or a video of that one anywhere! While we are on the subject of sound output, what is the coverage of the infamous Tbolt. I have seen literature that say anything from 125dbc to 130dbc. What is the real story on that siren?

Yes the Whelens (vortex R series and wps 4000 series) are quite loud and cover about a 3 mile radious. Now the thunderbolt 1000(single tone) is rated at 127 dB and the thunderbold 1000t (dual tone) as well as the 1003 are rated at 126 dB @ 100 feet. I don't think anybody has a video of a wps 4008 but I believe it was rated at 130 dB @ 100 feet.

ill see if i can get a video from a wps4008 since there every where up here but i think they only do silent tests and i dont even know if they use wail or alert or attack or one of the other sounds whelen has, on all the warning signs found say if there is a problem with the power plant tune to such a station affter hearing a 3 min to 5 mins blasts from the sirens i think from what i read it might be the air horn blasts from the siren ..
ill go check that out and see i can find the test times

Does anyone know what the price difference is between a WPS-4003, WPS-4004 and a WPS-4008?

By the rotator motor box. The 4004 has a round protrusion on the side of the box and the R4 has a square protrusion. That's probably the only visible way to tell.
