Sirens Producing Sound via Intakes?

Fri Aug 10, 2018 10:51 pm

Just like what I and you guys know, mechanical sirens produces sound via stators and suck air in via intakes, but sirens such as Super Sirexes, makes sound via the other way around, which makes me curious enough to ask the board. Any explanatories?

Super Sirexes do the same thing. Probably one of the biggest reasons why the Thunderbolt dominated the market instead of the SS. The SS pretty much projects nothing, so it's not much more than an omni-directional siren that rotates.
My knowledge excels on the Federal Thunderbolt siren and SiraTone EOWS sirens. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yep, but it seems like it DO projects sound. Take Adrian, MO's as an example, when its intake horns faces the camera (And the microphone as well), it sounds like OOOOOEOOOOOMMM and louder compared to when the stator openings faces the camera, the same 'type of sound' when other rotating sirens (Take P-50s as an example) has its horn faces the cam & mic. There's a louder sound and an OOOOM than when the horn faces away.

Yes and take a reverse wired Thunderbolt for another example. It still projects a sound even though it's running backwards. The sound it can produce however, is significantly less than a perfect Thunderbolt. You can't invert a chopper. Even though the Thunderbolt's blower might be sucking air in, the chopper is still working normally. The horns on the SS are intakes and the sound literally gets projected downwards much more than outwards. That design is heavily flawed and performed very poorly, hence why it didn't sell well.

The horns on the Super-Sirex really don’t do much, it was consistently loud the whole time it was rotating, was more like a really loud omnidirectional.

Another thing to remember is that SuperSirexes were one of the first sirens (correct me if i'm wrong) to be made, and they hadn't entirely perfected the design. For all we know, this was a design flaw and they never corrected it.

They weren't, they came about long after the first sirens were made. Super-Sirex is a early to mid 50's siren.

Really any siren like an Allertor or P-10/15/20 with the kind of rotating mechanism they use. You will find that these models specifically are wired backwards if they rotate clockwise instead of counter-clockwise.
Resident of a county with big a mixture of sirens, but in the process of being replaced. :(
