Looks like the ID plate was just painted on and not stamped, whatever was once written on it is now permanently lost.

By the way, how is this thing supposed to output anything? Looks like it only has holes for the intake...

Soak that tag in some easy off oven cleaner for a couple hours. Paint will come. Right off.

That sounds like the text on the ID plate will also come off. Are you sure only the outer layer of the paint that painted over the plate will be the only layer affected?

Pretty sure the text on the ID is engraved onto the plate.

We'd know if the OP has a feel round the tag and if he feels any regular bumps or pits then that's most likely stamping. And about that no-go situation with scraping it off. Down here in the UK most DIY stores will allow you to bring a paint sample along and they'll make an exact of close to copy of the colour and give you a tin. I'm pretty sure you will have those where you are. Bring the siren along and they should make a tin of like coloured gloss paint.
However, it's your siren so you choose what to do with it.

If it''s engraved (Like most siren info tags of the time were), the paint should just come right off no sweat.
