RIP Southington, CT First Gen Model 5

Wed Aug 29, 2018 6:10 pm

This siren was removed, and is assumed to be scrapped, after the removal of the building it is on... This extremely rare siren will be missed.

How have I never heard of the First-generation? Did anyone get better pics?

I have a feeling that this was a prototype, or rather a cut and hacksawed housing.

I’m still not convinced that it’s “first gen.” It looks like the shrouds were cut more than anything.
My knowledge excels on the Federal Thunderbolt siren and SiraTone EOWS sirens. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This Federal Model 5 was built and installed in the spring of 1931 in Saline, Michigan. The siren in this thread looks like it has a modified outer shroud, or one that might have been made in a sheet metal shop.

I honestly think it is original. It looks too clean to be some kind of a cut job.

I wouldn't be so sure myself, given both skirts are too short, even for the advertisement in my eyes. Who knows.

And before the 50's most of those pictures in advertisements we literally hand drawn by artists. They were photorealistic, but but they weren't actual photos.

Is this one? Looks like it has a similar shroud. Credit to VASirens (Now PeachtreeSirens) for the photo.

That looks like it's had some cutting done to it. Notice the bottom skirt has that rib that was pressed in for strength, that would usually be half way to 2/3 of the way down on a normal Model 7 skirt. The top has none (as normal), but it's been cropped incredibly short. Plus, the cut is uneven from that camera angle.
