Square Horned STL-10s?

Wed Jan 16, 2019 12:25 am

Hey all!

I was recently having a conversation with a friend of mine about an older inpatient facility in Fairfax, Viriginia. It was called Lee Ann Peyton, RPh (https://goo.gl/maps/9K86H1XKbGp Can be seen here with google maps, does not have street view coverage but satellite imaging is available)
The facility is now permanently shut down and is abandoned, and entry without the permission or escort of the area's police is now impossible. However, he told me during a visit in the past, he saw a strange omnidirectional siren. It had been dismounted from its pole and was resting next to it on the ground, it did not appear damaged in any way and its reason for having been dismounted was unclear. It was white, metallic and by his description, had large horns in all directions that were square in shape.
I showed him some images of possible matches (at first I thought it might have been some sort of rare Sentry) and he identified it as being a square horned STL-10!

I understand the square horned variant of STL-10 to be extremely rare, however my friend is certain that's what he saw. To my knowledge interestingly enough, the only other square horned STL-10 is (was?) located also in Virginia, Warrenton specifically.

I wanted to ask if anyone here is aware of any information on these sirens? Were they a prototype? Were the square projectors possibly custom modifications? Are there any known to exist outside of this possible one and the one in Warrenton? And what is the likelihood that the one in Lee Ann Peyton could still be there? Maybe it had been sold for scrap metal, maybe not, but I'm pretty curious. I don't know why an abandoned facility would need to manage a siren at all so my guess to why it was removed is as good as yours.

Sorry I don't have more definite information for you, or any photos. Just word of mouth that had me curious enough to go looking for answers!
sincerely yours, a weird siren obsessed deer 🦌

OMG! I had absolutely no knowledge of the siren in Fairfax! I'll have to go check it out sometime. The Warrenton STL-10 is still there, and is tested 3 minutes of attack every Saturday at noon. I know of a few other square-horned STLs in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New York. If you want, I can send you a list of them.

A siren with different horns dosn't necessarily mean it was sold that way. I've seen pictures of a brown square horned STL-10. Even though the build quality is great it was definitely a modification made.

Not to derail the topic, but what was the Lee Ann Peyton RPh? And why would it have a siren?

I have been wondering the same myself, it's a pretty mysterious place with little to no information online about it. My friend says he believes it was a privately owned inpatient medical facility, likely for recovering drug and alcohol addicts. However that doesn't answer why it would need to have a siren on site, since it was a pretty low security place for a long time and is located in the middle of a pretty ordinary urban neighborhood, I don't think it was an escape siren and I don't think the place held any dangerous individuals really? It's hard to say! Now that it's closed permanently it's likely that we'll never truly know the whole story

That is true, I feel like if the number of these particular sirens is exceptionally low it's safe to assume they're the result of home repair attempts on damaged horns. Would be really awesome to see some kind of documented proof confirming these sirens were actually built that way at a point, but until then I think it's safer to say someone altered them.

When I look at the place on google maps it gave me the mental clinic vibe. I do think it might have been one.
