Old Des Moines, IA metro siren system?

Wed Feb 13, 2019 4:05 am

Basically all Des Moines uses now is T-128's and the suburbs use Whelen's and 2001's. Our last old system siren, a Whelen 3016 in Urbandale, IA was replaced by a 2001 in January 2019. My fam did transport a Thunderbolt 1003 from Johnston, IA to Crosslake, MN in the 1990's so that does give a few clues

Any info anybody has on the old systems would be greatly appreciated!!!

They had a single head Super Si-Rex and a jailbar Thunderbolt 1000 in the downtown area. Both of which were removed.

Where did you get this information from? It was my understanding that the main metro cities of Iowa (Council Bluffs, Cedar Rapids, and Des Moines) all had Thunderbolts.
Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right.

My friend found it through some old newspaper articles.

Jared H. found it on a newspaper website, I believe either geneaology bank or newspapers.com. I'll let him know that you would like to see what he dredged up. In the meantime, here is a photo of the HOR. I do not recall what building it was on:

After doing some hunting, I found one of the last old metro system sirens on top of the Clive Fire Station, looks to be a model 2 and I do not think it is active, might try to get a hold of it.

WHOMST SUMMONED ME

So Des Monies tested the above HOR and a Thunderbolt in 1953. The thunderbolt vastly outperformed the Sirex and so that’s what they went with.

It looks like it has a single rotor, so it had to be single tone. It would probably be a 9 or 10 port chopper since that's what their single tone sirens seemed to gravitate towards.
