STH-10 and other vertical shaft sirens

Mon May 27, 2019 2:59 pm

I am curious. Has anyone ever given any consideration to building a 'mini' version of the Chrysler siren out of a vertical shaft siren like a STx-10 or a model 7 with the chopper assembly flipped over?
I see requests for single phase motors often and the Federal induction repulsion style motors that were single phase are sort of rare. Of course you can go through the efforts of building a phase converter, or buy a VFD to run these 3 phase sirens, but wouldn't it be easier to just directly power them off a gas lawn mower engine? You would need to verify that the chopper speed was similar to the gas engine so things didn't fly apart but then it would be fully portable, and require only a bit a gas in a small tank to get it to sound. A single cylinder 10 HP engine off a riding mower would be easy to source and mounting the engine would only require a basic mounting plate that a machine shop could turn out pretty easy.

Just a crazy thought.
