How much does a Thunderbolt weigh?

Tue Jul 23, 2019 8:37 pm

As the title says, how much does a TBolt 1003 weigh without the control boxes? We are shipping a 1003 and need to know how much it weighs. Thanks.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the siren head weighs about 300 to 400lbs (somewhere in that ballpark, maybe 500?)

It would depend on the paint, date, etc. Your best bet would to see if the Postal Service would weigh it for you.

That's entirely impractical for USPS. It would have to be shipped freight.

The weights are in the manuals, which by handy coincidence, we have an entire stickied thread for (and big thanks to Charlie Davidson for maintaining such a thorough collection of them on his Dropbox).

The entire 1003 siren head weighs 333 pounds, I checked the manual. The blower weighs 600 pounds.

I did look into a few different Thunderbolt manuals and I couldn't find an exact weight, I may have just read over it, though. I'll read back through it again and check.

600 seems a lot for the blower, but thank you!

Really depends on the year and what type of compressor it has on the blower frame. Here is an estimated breakdown of the parts weight judging on what ive dealt with/own.

Thunderbolt horn approx: 100lbs
thunderbolt chopper/rotator assy. Approx :250-300'ish lbs
10 ft sections of standpipe w/flange. Approx: 100lbs each
Thunderbolt A1 series compressor with cover. Approx: 800+ lbs (has to be dissassembled into pieces before you can move it "dead weight".
Thunderbolt 5m series compressor with cover. Approx: 500+ lbs (has to be taken apart into pieces before you can move it.
thunderbolt RCM box (1952 onward) Approx: 75 lbs
ARCH/radiotrol cabinet. Approx: 60+ lbs
AR/AF timer (by itself) Approx: 15+ lbs (ive seen different weights on when ive had them shipped from various sellers)

Disclamer: i have not entirely weighed these things piece by piece / 100%. these are based on personal opinion of the approximated weights of each piece due to my personal experience in handling said parts.
Female enthusiast who is the owner of many large and small sirens, misc controls, timers etc. (too many to list in this small space) all big sirens came from cincinnatis old system.
