Fedelcode Model 2, questions

Tue Dec 31, 2019 4:46 pm

so my town has a fedelcode and is usually will do a growl at noon, but when i went out to hear it it did not fire. the next day it did go off but it sounded faint, i also noticed that it went off at 12:03. the next day it went and sounded loud and as strong as it should be, it also went at 12:03. today the same thing happens as day 2.

questions when 3 times it went were at the same time i believe it is on a timer. then why on the first day how come it did not go?

what explains the lack of sound on days 2 and 4? another siren is out of the picture the closest one is the other direction.
has anyone ever heard of sirens having a different strength?

thanks

The original purpose of the Fedelcode line - as it's a portmanteau of the words Federal, Electric, and Coded - was to have a code damper, which would allow or prevent airflow and therefore sound, to produce pulsed codes such as morse code. Ironically, many Fedelcode-branded sirens are actually not coded, but it's possible this one is. I have no idea why the damper would be closed on only one day, or what kind of control anyone would still have over the damper.

Weather conditions and wind can affect your hearing of a siren, but it's possible this one is also dampered somehow.

How close were you to it? Same distance each time? What were the weather conditions?

Here’s an advert for the aforementioned coded Type 2:

It appears to have a ring-style shutter that covers the individual ports, kinda like those hand crank sirens.
