Vortex repair photos.

Sun May 10, 2020 6:36 pm

Got a couple pictures of a Whelen Vortex repair I did last year.

Image
Co worker pulling the head off the gear box.
This required the removal of all the drivers from the unit to balance it. The heads without drivers are remarkably lite,, but cumbersome to deal with due to their size.

Image
Drivers pulled and getting ready to remove the head.

Now it's MY turn to get in the air and work.

The old gear box.
These don't go bad much but you could hear this one running over the sound of the siren going off.

Image

View of the ground from up top. Note the head sitting on the ground.
This was all before lunch.

Gearbox was replaced before lunch.
Reinstalled the head and the drivers after lunch and got it buttoned up.

Most repairs on these are the electronics in the cabinet or drivers. While the views from up in the air are ok, I prefer the views from my tower.

Pardon me for asking this unrelated question, but is your tower an ex-AT&T Long Lines one? It looks suspiciously similar to one

Are there any photos of the inside of a Whelen rotator? I'm interested to see what the internals look like, and how the limit switches are implemented.
