Electronic siren speakers also emit sine waves while the electro-mechanical sirens emit saw tooth waves. The sawtooth wave is better by far at penetrateing vehicles. Also, the saw tooth, as heard from mechanical tornado sirens is better at "moveing" arround buildings and other obstructions such as trees. The mechanical siren is truly the leader in warning sirens, both vehicular and in storm warning. I would agree that power consumption and size/weight play a large role in the fact that they are no longer common on most emergency vehicles. I can't stand the quality of sound heard from the new electonic sirens. They do not sound like the mechanical sirens and probly never will. People just don't care what it sounds like.
