what are the most common types of sirens?

Thu Jul 01, 2021 2:35 pm

Hi! I'm pretty new, both to here and to sirens in general.
I've had a lot of EAS siren/air-raid siren videos pop up in my recommendations time and time again, and after a while, i believe this has sparked a bit of an interest in me to try and learn a bit more about these. they're honestly pretty fascinating and it's incredibly interesting to see how many variations there are.

I know of a couple of names/terms, such as Whelen, and GCS, but that's as far as I know unfortunately.
It would be really nice to have a little bit of a starting point to properly get started, since I know such a small amount that I don't believe knowing only those would get me very far.
would anyone be so kind as to help me start and give me a small list of the more common sirens, listed with their look/design and their manufacturers to help me look into this more?

thank you very much! :)

In the US, the "big 3" siren manufacturers are ASC (American Signal), Federal Signal, and Whelen Engineering. There is another somewhat smaller corporation known as ATI, or "Acoustic Technologies Incorporated", that makes sirens of questionable quality and reliability.

I myself don't statistically know the most common siren out of those 4 manufacturers, but I will say that the ASC T-128 and Federal Signal 2001 are pretty common, to the point where you've probably seen one on a road trip without knowing.

Edit: Correction, Sentry Siren is also a decent siren manufacturer if omnidirectional sirens are what's needed.

The 100% most common siren is the Federal Signal 2001. This siren is used for a lot of purposes from tornados to nuclear emergencies. They are extremely common in the Midwest and generally areas of tornado alley. After that is probably, as 07VFDInLCD said, the ASC T-128.
2001s range from 2001-DC (First Generation)
2001-SRN and SRN-B (Battery backup) and the most recent 2001, the 130. There are also Eclipse 8s disguised as 2001s called the Equinox. Everything is identical to the 2001 except the chopper (i think.)
Sirens may not be sexy, but they sure work.
