The Tulsa 4008 Lives???

Tue Jan 20, 2009 5:34 am

Well guys - I think our lone 4008 lives. I think it's been moved about 2 blocks west of the original location next to Grove Elementary school... there's a siren adjacent to the football field behind the 6th & 7th grade center. Next time I'm out there, I'm going to take a closer look.

Found it! It's between the UMAC and 6th-7th Grade Center. It's on the N-S street on the east side of the 6th-7th. Easy to spot.

The Plano sirens have the older high-pitched tone cards in them. Plano tests in Attack.

Yup, we have lots of these WPS-4008's here in Plano! There's one right by my school and one by one of the fire stations, both within 10 min biking distance from my house. I actually biked out to my school yesterday (it's a Saturday, nobody's there, empty parking lot!) And I rode my bike out into the field where the siren is and took many pictures of it. It had been raining all day for the past 3 days (lots of Flash Flood Warnings on my NOAA weather radio, as brought up a few posts ago, they don't sound the sirens for a flash flood.) so the ground was all wet. I touched the bottom of the pole it was sitting on because I'm weird like that. The red Whelen logo on the battery/electronics box was faded, being kind of hard to see now. The siren was tested a few days ago, but I unfortunately didn't hear it because my school was eating lunch at the time and everyone talks during that time. I do recall hearing them test the siren around 1:30 pm in 6th grade. I also have a memory of a tornado warning for my area, stepping outside, hearing the siren, along with a prerecorded voice clip that sounded kind of menacing, saying "tornado warning." with a pause in between the 2 words. That moment was what got me into sirens as a whole. I wish i got a video of it. I don't really have any memories of the one by the fire station, i only realized it was there a few days ago. I have never seen any of them actually active (like spinning), but when I wait for my bus to come pick me up from school I can see the WPS in the distance. Ok enough of my rambling now.

You can see the faded Whelen logo on the batteries here.

For the most part they do have the 864s, but a few have been upgraded, along with their omni's. They recently stopped replacing their 4008s (from what i've heard, but correct me if i'm wrong), so their 864 wail should remain for a while.

None of Plano's sirens have 864 panels. They did when they went up in the early 90's which were analog and sounded like the older 4004s and 2700 series sirens. They were upgraded in the early 2000s to the early 2020 panels with the lower pitch and slowly upgraded to newer 2020s and eventually 2030s if something went wrong with the controls.
