The Los Angeles County Siren Thread

Wed Sep 30, 2009 3:13 am

There is a lot of info circulating around back and forth about various sirens in cities throughout LA County, so I thought it would be helpful to organize everything together. This list is for sirens in every area outside of Los Angeles city limits. I have a map with the exact city limits that I am working with, so I'll try to keep them organized that way. It's for exact locations of sirens that are either currently in place or have been removed. The cities are listed alphabetically. If a siren does not fall within an incorporated city limit, it can go in the unincorporated LA County section at the end. If there is general information about a particular city, but not exact locations, I'll add that also.

Italicized sirens will be ones that have been removed

I'm going through some more notes of mine and I'll add those as I come across them. You also mentioned a siren in Torrance 6 years ago or so. Do you remember where it was and if it's still there?

I might be able to help a bit on that list...

First, Thank you (and source, if other than you), for the Warner location in Culver City of the 3rd Allertor! I had always wondered where it was, as I couldn't recognize the surroundings in the picture on Polar Inertia.com where I saw it. I'll try to get over there ASAP and have a look. Sadly, I have the feeling it's probably gone because they just had a huge face-lift project on that whole part of Culver City, including the relocation of a few major streets, and demolition of most of the buildings. Braddock/Sawtelle location is still there as of 2 weeks ago, and the Veterans' Building rooftop one is still there, unless CableVision was able to get hold of it.

The Hermosa Beach siren was always tested at noon Sundays when I was little. We had a vacation place down there. But that may have changed to daily since then. The police station was/is on Valley just south of Pier Ave.

In Beverly Hills, I believe that all Thunderbolts were indeed removed, as you indicate with the Marilyn/Pine location in italics, but is there any info on where the rest of them were installed? I recognized one location in the photos, as the southwest corner of Beverwil Dr. and Olympic Bl.

One to add; Long Beach: Model 5 (7?) just west of Atlantic, and just north of the 405 Fwy. Visible from the 405, and looking at the map, it may be at the dead end of Pasadena Ave and the 405 right-of-way. It's beat-up & rusty, looks like it's totally shot. on 2 crooked wooden poles.

There is also a system of 2001s in Castaic, which is the extreme north end of Los Angeles County. Those are for the LA County Jail, so not sure if you're counting jail/prison systems. Likewise for the Chino State Prison, which Soundoff has shown tests of (from outside, of course ;) ) Chino is on the LA-San Bernardino County line, and I'm not sure which county the prison (and the sirens) would be in.

If I think of any others, or when I get a chance to check the locations you have, I'll report back.

Charles
Yes, that's a real 500-lb Federal SD-10 I'm holding (braggart!)

Actually one more Long Beach model 5-7? It's off willow and palo verde, just east of the 605 I have a pic of it on the mystery siren thread since I know little to nothing on a lot of sirens.

Long Beach sirens

Fri Oct 02, 2009 8:17 pm

I think that Palo Verde & Willow is a ACA Screemer Duo Tone
the city had eight of them but only seven of them are left at my
last count, thats been a fiew years. All the ACA sirens were on steel or
alluminum poles . Check around 5656 Orange Ave for one more
and Long Beach Bl. and 14 th street in alley .

The Chrysler at the Cerro Negro Lookout Tower should actually be in La Ca?ada Flintridge instead of Glendale.

I checked on Monday to see if the San Dimas Thunderbolt 2000 was still there as earlier this spring, Edison were replacing the power poles that ran through that alley. The siren is still there but is now disconnected; the electric meter visible in one of my photos and some of the wiring had since been removed.

Chino Prison is actually in San Bernardino County.

I believe CABLEvision once mentioned a small siren (Sterling ?) on a fire station in La Habra Heights

A quick Google Search of La Mirada air raid sirens came up with a facebook where one mentioned of a siren on Rosecrans and Valley View.
