6 active ex-Trojan units found(plus more)

Mon Jun 28, 2021 9:38 pm

So recently, an old thread about a dam failure siren system for the McGuire Reservoir in Oregon surfaced, and that encouraged me to hunt for sirens along the Nestucca river. I ended up finding 5 clearly ex-Trojan Model 2s, plus one which had already been known about:

https://goo.gl/maps/z2wEvPwjfSWRn9Yu9

https://goo.gl/maps/R2PZdeW4b8GAHKtV9

And the one that had already been located, but was not known to be part of a new system:

And today, I called Tillamook County EMA and they said that they were still active!!! This brings the number of 100% certain to be active ex-Trojan units up to 7! Every siren has a plaque stating that they are tested on the second Wednesday of the month, but the street view was too low resolution to make out the smaller text that probably had the exact time. Also, not only this, but I was told that there was also a system for the Barney Reservoir, which lead me to find these locations:

https://goo.gl/maps/w75UNB5hTGML8cWZ7(possible siren)
https://goo.gl/maps/GiABrSdN7hhK7sN86(possible siren)

I’m 100% sure that ones for the Barney Reservoir are not ex-Trojan, as they look like 2001s(with a random Modulator thrown in). The guy at the EMA said they were not controlled by the county, but rather by McMinnville Water and Light, who owns the reservoirs. This is big, because there are very few inland systems in Oregon and the discovery of a new one provides lots of chances for siren recordings and other things, and previously there was only one confirmed to be active ex-Trojan unit, the Roads End Model 2 in Lincoln City, now there are 7.

I can confirm that the Barney reservoir sirens are 2001s. I went and mapped out 5 of them yesterday, you can view the locations on this map: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit? ... 30784&z=10
they are tested the second monday of every month.

The siren at the campground is a Modulator 2008.

There seems to be some misconceptions in the siren community about confirming ex-trojan sirens so I want to clear them up in this post. To figure out if a siren is ex-trojan, there is only 1 reliable way to confirm this. All former Trojan Nuclear Power Plant sirens have been assigned a unique ID that was assigned by Trojan when they installed the sirens. Each siren had a tag manufactured and riveted to the RCM panel cover when the sirens were painted, sealed and installed. The way to confirm is to see if the holes are still in the panel from where the tag used to be or if the tag is in place. ALL 6 of the sirens Sam listed have these tags which 100% confirms they are former Trojan sirens (at least, the controls are). The 6th siren listed has trojan controls but the actual Model 2 housing is not from the original Trojan installation. It should also be noted, there are 2 rivets for the tag and 2 screws which hold the Federal Signal placard inside the panel which has the unit info on it. The paint is almost never a good way to confirm a siren is formerly from Trojan as Trojan used 2 paint colors for their sirens (dark green and neutral brown). It should also go without saying, Trojan never bought anything except Federal Signal's sirens up until they installed the WPS-3016's at the late operating life of the power plant. If someone were able to get the actual ID letter/numbers from those sirens in Beaver, we are able to find out the exact place those sirens were installed when they were still apart of the Trojan system. Here is an example of the ID tags I’m talking about (This is W-102 which is a Thunderbolt still standing in Longview):

Are the units in Lincoln City former Trojan units? I always thought they were the city's system and not from the NPP.

It is highly-likely. In 2019, North Lincoln Fire & Rescue replaced a defunct Model 2 located just outside of the Roads End State Park with a spare Model 2 from the Trojan NPP; so, it is highly likely that all of the Model 2s' installed in Lincoln City are Ex-Trojan units.

I'd say A decent chunk of the older mechanical sirens along the coast that are federal signal have a decent chance of being Ex-trojan. of course, holding off on confirmation until photographic evidence of the tag on the control boxes should still be practiced.
