It was most certainly the Square one. I was blown away when I saw it, and almost crashed the car! I wonder if the city even knows that it has (had) a very rare and unique piece of equipment. Even if it were the round type it would be pretty rare.

 Yuh, you're lucky you just got to see one..... If they HAD to choose a new siren a T-128 would have been a better choice than a Fed. 2001-130. Anyone else contacted the city yet? These cities, unfortunatly, don't seem to give a crap about an old siren that's historic. They'll just discard it as last week's newspaper when it comes to newer sirens being available.......

BTW, only 4 or 5 Square H-Canes were built. 100 rounded ones were built. Nakoska WI used to have a square horned one. It's gone. The PROTOTYPE MKII was in GreenDALE WI. ASC apparantly saved it after it was damaged in a storm. Just in case anyone cared............

I am surprised the square-horned Hurricanes were that few in number. There used to be one in Plymouth, MN right next to I-694. A 2001 is there now. I can maybe thank that siren for my increasing interest in them. I was aware of thunderbolts (didn't know what they were called back then) but one with 'dual' horns totally blew me away. I think it was gone by 1990 or so. The only other Hurricane I've ever seen here in the twin cities area was one on the Rosemount/Apple Valley border (a round one), and mounted on the most crooked pole I'd ever seen a siren on. Unfortunately, this siren was gone by 1990 or so also.

Hi,
The reason so few Square horned Hurricanes were built was because water tended to collect at the bottom of the horns, hence, freezing it up.... Why so few MKII (Rounded) Hurricanes were built, I don't know.... Despite knowing a fair amout of these sirens, I'll probably never see one in person. -_- By the way, I called Baxter MN's city staff yesterday. They seemeto have had ZERO clue about any Hurricane 130 being up there. I presume this siren was taken down a while ago, then........ Which is a shame, really, as, Darien IL's Hurricanes seem to be the only honest ones in working condition now........

I remember from the Plymouth siren side profile that the lower portion of the horn reminded me of a pouting kid with his lower lip stuck out for some reason. The horn actually seemed to be ever so slightly angled toward the ground. I thought that the reason it appeared that way was to prevent water from backing up into the stator. They certianly were not symetrical like a t-bolt.

Some insight into the Baxter siren may be found here:

Looks like a Holden Electric may have been the contractor that replaced the Hurricane.

Yeah. Here's their website. Maybe contact them about the siren? I'm not doing it, though. http://holdenelectric.com/
