Woodward, OK sirens

Thu Apr 19, 2012 4:25 am

Looks like a 2t22 was a victim of the storms late Saturday night/early Sunday morning.

(See picture attached to newson6.com story - ignore the comments... unless you want to raise your BP...)

Also -

Apparently, there was a failure of the activation system (by power failure or by lightning strike or a combination thereof) that kept the majority of the sirens silenced. Six people - including 3 children - were lost to the storm.

Prayers to the families of the victims.

Seeing this, I have to regrettably admit that a modern siren system may have been able to save the lives of these 6 people. As much as a like the Cold War era sirens, our current generation of sirens with battery backup and solor power create a more stable and usable system than the oldies. I hope that sometime in the future, siren companies will blend the battery backup era with the cold war area to make some great sounding and reliable sirens.

The thing that pisses me off, is there are no news reports about how many lives sirens saved that day across the mid section of the US. The are only stories about ones that failed. Happens every time.....

A follow-up to the tragic storms in Woodward two weeks ago:

http://woodwardnews.net/local/x18658254 ... r-Woodward

Kudos to Apache Corp. to funding a new system for the city. But I have to wonder about the reporting:
The system will include 3 large sirens with a 3-mile radius set up in strategic points in the heart of the community and 20 1-mile sirens - 16 new and 4 retrofitted - set up at major intersections in Woodward and along the major highways.
Three that can be heard for three miles??? Good grief - are they going to use Chryslers???? Yikes.

I did like the end of the article tho:
The emergency management director and city officials continued to stress that the sirens are just one of the 3 layers of protection citizens should use. It is important to have a weather radio and also there is the cell-phone notification system that went into place the first of April.
Good for them to encourage the Wx Radio. Ours has awakened us in time to move our cars into the garage before a severe hailstorm hit one night. I know the "reverse 911" systems are ho-hum at best and I'm not a fan of them (ours in Sand Springs is a bit slow at best - I got a tornado warning call 30 min after the particular storm passed us by).

Cheers,

Williesan

Weather radios and storm shelters would have.

Remember that we're dealing with a news outlet getting info from the city. Not all of the siren specs are going to be entirely accurate. It's probably more like a mile and a half or so for the "larger" sirens and a half mile for the "smaller" sirens.

I believe that Woodward will be in good shape once their new sirens are in. I'm about 90% sure that Storm Sirens Inc. is a reseller and installer of Sentry Sirens so we're probably looking at 16V1T-Bs and 7V8-Bs. Woodward will just have to be sure and stay on top of changing out all 138 batteries every few years.

I checked out their websight, and they are a reseller of a few companies. ( including federal signal) :)
