Elmira, Ontario Outdoor Warning Sirens

Sat Jan 19, 2013 7:23 pm

Was out in Elmira this morning so I recorded the Saturday test of the towns outdoor warning sirens. The system consists of the original STH-10 fire call siren, a Model 5/7, and a second STH-10 purchased in 2004.

The sirens are used to warn of industrial accidents at the refinery in town, as well as tornado warnings.

Unfortunately, the Model 5/7 did not activate, and the sirens only sounded for a short blast.

Sounds good! They really have a nice system, too bad the 5 didn't activate.

It makes a good excuse to go back to make a full system recording. With my recent siren luck it's a wonder they even tested at all. Twice last week I tried to make recordings in Lambton County, but both times the sirens were mistakenly not sounded. It's taken me 9 years to make it back to Elmira since I last made a recording, so let's hope it won't be another 9 before I get out there again! (It's only 13 km north of here AND I worked in town during the summer lol)

As for Woolwich Township, they'll probably be having full 3-5 minute siren tests coming up in Spring in all their towns and villages... so something to keep a watch for. Also, Breslau is getting a new siren this year...

Siren_Dude, have you got any plans to make recordings in the near future?

Hopefully your luck changes, so far I've recorded five sirens, only once one didn't go off. Only 13 km?s away and It takes you nine years to record there system  . If I lived that close I would go like once a month.

I have wanted to go to Elmira and record the system for awhile now and a 5 minute sounding sounds to good to pass up. Please let me know if you hear any more information on that. The only other places would maybe be St.Marys and Sebringville again. Every other place seems too far to go and record unless I'm just passing by.

LOL I used to bike 14 km once or twice every week to go railfanning!

I love how the two sirens wind down less than a second away from each-other, sounds almost like a 2T22!

I kinda like how they didn't sound uniformly. Nice video!

It's always good to hear siren recordings from our northern neighbours.

Unlike Meriden where all three went off at the same time making that weird sound.
