Restored Thunderbolt 1000 test run

Thu Oct 03, 2013 8:00 am

Just as the title says, it was hideously loud.

As far as tonal quality, nothing really beats the 1000 in my book. Dat Bass.

Yeah it was quite painful to be anywhere near the horn outlet. Even off to the side it was uncomfortable due to the vibrations.

Besides the size, what are the differences between the 4M and 5M blowers?

Regardless of what cycle the thing's on, you're either bleeding out your ears at peak or having your bones rattled at wind-down.

Why is the relief valve bouncing before and after the wind up?

Seems that the port in the stator is closed by the rotor. While the chopper port is closed, the air is forced out of the relief valve.

Is the blower motor single phase or 3 phase?

It's because this blower has a slightly higher air output than the smaller blowers found on later A2 and C series sirens, and and that relief valve has about the same amount of weight on it as the ones on the smaller blowers, which isn't quite enough to keep it from bouncing up and down from the excess back pressure. I'm sure the chopper port was also at least partially closed both before and after it ran, so that definitely contributes to it.

Three phase; all of the ones we're overhauling have three phase blower motors. Most of them also have three phase rotator motors installed for ease of maintenance (no start caps or centrifugal switches to go bad).
