Rosemont, Illinois...Siren?

Sun Dec 08, 2013 9:51 pm

So earlier today a friend of mine from Chicagoland told me his dad saw crews putting up a siren on the south side of Rosemont, near O'Hare airport. His dad got video of it, and I gotta say this is the creepiest looking "siren"/PA speaker thing that I have ever seen, whatever it is.Anyone know anything about this? We have very little info at this point.

It's definitely some sort of noise making device. It's hard to tell from the photo, but the ends are (or at least look to be) large re-entrant speakers.

If its near the airport, could it be something used to keep animals, such as birds, away from the runways?

Boy…got me

My first thought was along the line of Toledo's. Except I wondered if it wasn't a giant white noise machine. The residents of Rosemont have been absolutely screaming since O'Hare opened its new runway. Apparently it's caused all kinds of noise that wasn't there before. So I wonder if it wasn't some sort of white noise machine to dampen the sound of the planes coming in.

That makes a lot of sense, it's right off of the Tri-State on the east side of the airport. Interesting, nonetheless.

Hmm..I may have to check that out. It could possibly be exhaust or intake for something. I believe there are tunnels and service utility vaults underneath the airport. This could be for that. O'Hare also uses gas turbine generators for emergency power, this could be intake or exhaust for that. The more I look at it, the more it looks like some sort of ductwork. Even the throats of the "horns" look like they could possibly be tube-axial blowers. Anything is possible though, but it looks way too big to be a noise making device, that would be insane!

This is by the Muvico theater I doubt there are tunnels that go there far.

Is it on the east or west side of the Tri-State? If it's by Muvico, then whatever it is is outside the airport completely. Could be for something else, still looks like some kind of exhaust. Still thinking possible emergency power generation for the convention center or something.
