Chicago LOW Poles

Tue Dec 17, 2013 3:26 am

Does anyone have any info or pictures of when Chicago first installed their 2001's? I remember they were on very LOW poles until 2004 when I remember seeing the 2001 in Oriole Park taken down from a small pole and put on a larger one in its current locations. Any info or pictures would be great!

The pole was this low. FS said that Chicago put them on taller poles because people were complaining that they were literally eye lever with their house.

I have never seen any Chicago siren on a low pole besides this particular Modulator. Every other pole I have seen has been the same pole since 1998. Even some of the sirens that were moved downtown due to construction were left on the same pole. Poles are around 40-50 feet. I have seen some of these sirens shortly after installation in 1997-98, before electric service was run to them, same poles today. Chicago did not put these sirens up anyway. Braniff Communications did and they still take care of them, so they would have been to FS specs from the start.

The only reason this particular Mod is so low is that it is right outside Midway Airport and is in the path of a runway. EVERYTHING over there is super low, even streetlights and traffic signals. This being a small siren, it's not an issue.

Wow that strange. The 2001 in Oriole Park was on a pole this short. Even FS said that most of the sirens were.

i never saw the one at Oriole park before 2006. but i have seen the one at the firehouse on Cumberland shortly after installation in 1998. same pole. same with all the ones on the southside that were installed in late 1997 (it seemed like they were installed south to north.). i lived near wrigley from 2004 until this year, same pole now as it was then. maybe the oriole park one was lower for some other reason. midway mod ia low because of the runway. who did you talk to at fs? how would they know? Braniff installed the sirens.

It was through FB. They said they were there when Braniff installed the sirens and some were on short poles. And people complained so they raised them. The one that was in Oriole Park was on the corner of Balmoral and Olcott, in front of that house where the bush is now. Too bad I was to small to even bother and take a picture.

i do remember some sirens being moved because people did not want them so close to their houses, but out of the 50 or so sirens i found between 1997 and 2004, all were on standard poles 40 to 50 feet tall. with the exception of the midway mod. who did you talk to at Federal?
