Darley I'm restoring

Sun Jan 19, 2014 7:02 am

Most have probably seen this on facebook. I had posted on a fb page a while back looking for sirens to buy. Guy said they had one, then his chief decided he wanted it redone. After months of trying to meet up I was finally able to check it out the Saturday before Christmas. Seen the one brush holder was gone so I left it and started emailing people. He called me up a couple days later and said he found some stuff for it. We met up and I brought it home. The "missing" brush holder was what he had found. It was broken so had it welded and got new brushes for it. Tested it on 110 and it worked. Was told to continue working on it so tonight I broke it all down.

Like I've always said, the Darley "helmet" is not a Model 2!

No kidding, up to this point I thought all Darleys were repackaged Federals.

I wonder if that chopper is what led some people to claim the existence of a "six port" Thunderbolt a while back...

Federal made 6 port rotors for their Thunderbolts I know for a fact. That high pitched 1000 on top of that building complex in Cincinnati, Ohio is a 6 port because a 1000 with 5 ports set on level 7 cannot reach that height of a pitch unless it's not getting air from the blower, thus allowing the chopper to overspeed. Ask Bill Nagler.

a 6-port T1000 (the siren, not the execrable Pontiac twin to the Chevrolet Chevette) would have a 20% higher pitch than the standard 5 port for the same chopper speed. I've seen the video of the siren you refer to, and it's way higher than a 6-port vs. a 5-port would explain. There have also been some incredibly high-pitched 1000Ts (the Glassport one, for example.) The only reasonable explanations I've seen for either are 1) the multi-tap transformer feeding the chopper was used on the wrong mains voltage (e.g. using a transformer for a 208/240VAC feed on a 480VAC mains) or 2) using a 120VAC Model 2 armature in a Thunderbolt.

It's not mine. I'm restoring it for a fire company.
