What is the difference between a Model 5 and a Model 7?

Thu Feb 13, 2014 5:03 pm

Is there any difference? Is one an earlier version? Which one is a better siren?

There actually is no difference. Supposedly the Model 5 had 5 horsepower and the Model 7 had 7HP, but in reality they were both the same siren and actually had about 10HP. The siren should have been named the Model 10, but I believe there were some regulations that restricted motor horsepower, so Federal Signal lied about the rating so they could get past them.

The Model 7 name was discontinued long before the Model 5 name I believe. If any of that is wrong, someone who knows more can correct me.

I think the housings were slightly different. I'm not 100% sure on that though.

Batman hit the nail right on the head. The Model 7 is an older Model 5.

I don't think so because the Model 5 came before the Model 7 from what I've seen.
My knowledge excels on the Federal Thunderbolt siren and SiraTone EOWS sirens. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Pardon me if this is a dumb question but why was there a horse power limit on motors of 10HP was it a Civil Defense requirement?

The early restrictions were in place for fire sirens because of the electrical grid. REA frowned upon any motor bigger than 5 horsepower.

There was no such thing as a 10 horsepower limit. The P-50 and the Super Sirexes are proof of that.

Model 5 is high-tone; & model 7 is low-tone. However, Models 5T & 7T are dual-tone like the SD-10
