British Columbia dam sirens

Sun Apr 06, 2014 1:29 am

A few years ago, I heard two sirens, one of which I couldn't identify at a bed and breakfast. The identified siren was clearly a model 2, which is mounted in a nearby parking lot. However, the other siren is still a mystery to me. It had a quick windup, and a low tone, and even though it was far away, it completely drowned out the nearby model 2. An ad in the local newspaper that warns of spill gate opening shows a picture of what appears to be either a CLM omnidirectional, or a model 5/7 without the cover. however the picture is very fuzzy, and I can't make it out. I am guessing that it must be a model 5/7 low tone, because it sounded like it had 8 ports, but I am probably wrong. Does anyone know anything about the sirens used by BC hydro? I can't investigate, because the dam where the siren is located is fenced off.

It is located in Powell River, British Columbia. It is still up, but no longer active.

When did you last see that siren in person? I talked to the city back in 2010 and they contacted the Department of National Defence to remove them. The DND did contract a company to remove all five sirens and they were then sold off by the remover.

Btw nice to have another Canadian siren fan on the forum

I last saw this siren yesterday. For some reason, the siren removal program skipped this one. I`m very glad to hear that the other sirens were sold off instead of being scrapped. If I see this one go down, I will make an offer on it.

I wonder if the vertical CLM's are still around in Nelson, BC.

I doubt it, the one in my avatar is only still there because the removal crews forgot to remove it. However, I plan on looking for sirens next time i`m down there.

I apologize for not using quotes when answering the first 2 questions. I`m new, and I didn`t see the quote button.
