So I found this along Leedsburg Pike in Great Falls, VA while I was visiting Washington D.C. this weekend. I passed it a few times as my hotel was in Potomac Falls. It might not even be a siren but does anyone have any ideas?

I live right near there and they have those things ALL OVER Great Falls and some other parts of Fairfax County. I don't think they are sirens. I think they are cell towers or something like that.

too low to be cell towers, but they could be microwave antennas for any number of purposes.

Huntsville's school system used to use microwave antennas at the schools to link them with the security in downtown. emofficer says that they had a guy smash the controls and cut the wires to a Thunderbeam that used to be at McDonnel Elementary School thinking he was disabling the microwave antenna. You can also find the antennas at the older school buildings around here.

I agree, that's a weird place to put an A/C unit, especially since that's probably what that dark green box on the platform is on the side of the building. It's probably a Sterling or Federal B that someone thought was "ugly".

Well, I had to make an emergency trip home (State College, PA to Pittsburgh) last weekend for a family member's funeral. Near Altoona, a semi truck had gone over a cliff and messed up traffic like I've never seen. In the craziness, I made a wrong turn and wound up about 50 miles out of my way, in the middle of nowhere. Turns out I was in the Somerset, PA area near the Flight 93 Memorial site. As I was driving along, I passed the Shawnee Valley Volunteer Fire Co., and spotted a bright yellow siren up on their roof! I wasn't sure what it was, so I figured I'd post it here. I'm thinking it's some kind of Sterling? If you visit the website and click on the top photo, it links to an older photo where the siren is painted red. Sorry for the small pic, the Google Earth views are extremely blurry.

Eh, looks to be an M-5 based on size. However, it's hard to tell exactly how far back it's mounted, so it may be an M-10.
