"Everbridge" replaces Winder, GA's sirens

Tue Jul 08, 2014 4:24 pm

Winder's sirens have been decommissioned as of May of this year. Apparently they've had Reverse 911 for years but are trying this new warning system out. They have a system of 2001's (the model between the roundback and the 2001DC), a fairly new Eclipse 8H and a Model 2. The Model 2 is at Fort Yargo and here are the others:

What's funny is according to this article (http://onlineathens.com/stories/022107/ ... 1086.shtml) the City of Auburn talked with Winder about their warning sirens before purchasing a system of their own. Ironic how that works out.

Here's the article with the Reverse-911 tidbit and some pretty good information about the local sirens (http://www.gwinnettdailypost.com/news/2 ... -comes-to/)

I think it's quite stupid to discontinue use of them. The Eclipse isn't that old. I have no clue where the Ft Yargo siren is, as it's the Model 2 that was once on top of the fire department where the Eclipse is. A long, long time ago the fire chief mentioned they had STH10's but I've never seen nor heard of any other than that.

We use Everbridge here too. It doesn't always send warnings out in time and you have to sign up for it for them to contact you. If you don't know about it, you can't sign up. We've used it for several years here but we still have sirens. We have sirens that are only a year old. Everbridge and any other R-911 type system should be used in conjunction with sirens, not a replacement. Any and all means of notification should be used. Stupid, stupid decision.

Just as dumb as Pelham, AL's decision. At least Pelham decided to keep using them until they die, so they should get several more years out of theirs.

The email that I received is there will be a vote tonight about placing the sirens on gov.deals for sale. I replied in an email asking if it had been considered to keep the sirens in place and maintained as a backup. I don't live in Winder; I live in Bogart, about 20 minutes away, however the Winder sirens were the first ones I've ever heard for an actual warning, and I do hate to see them go.

Everbridge is the system that Upson county uses along with it's sirens to alert the public.

One does not simply replace the other, it takes both systems working together.
