New Toy: Hand operated VILMA +VIDEO!

Sun Oct 26, 2014 3:05 pm

It seems I'm finally able to get my hands on a (very rare to find in market) Greek siren. This model is a circa 1965 hand operated VILMA. It works fine, except some noises heard from inside (?) I hope nothing is wrong with the gears.

The problem is that some screws are heavily corroded and I'm afraid I won't be able to open the stator cover unless I have it machined. (I would prefer not to) Also I cannot remove the hand crank in order to open the back cover to inspect the gears. Take a look at the pin that holds the crank to the axle.

Νο, it was on a local site. I will make a video as soon as I restore it. It's quite loud!

The opened gear box and the chopper. The gears are in perfect shape and seem well lubed.

Despite the fact this is my fourth siren restoration, and the previous sirens where in quite rough condition, I'm totally stuck right now. I had a very hard time trying to drill the stator cover, given that the screws were completely corroded. I have finally removed the cover but now I'm facing two serious problems: first the rotor does not turn freely now, maybe the pressure I put has bent the axle or slightly some of the ports and they osculate at some point. Second, if I want to extract the rotor I have to uncouple the bearing (photo2) from its housing (behind the gear). I'm not going to tap it, I think it's not safe. Any ideas?? Help me guys, I never thought it would be so hard this time...

Restoration completed! I have to tell you it was not easy at all. The siren bearings have been replaced and it was painted in the original colors. (Sikkens car paint) The siren has 8 ports and it can reach 92 dB @ 30 M at full speed.
