Athens, Georgia 2t22 Test 12-27-14

Sat Dec 27, 2014 10:30 pm

So, I went over to pay Mr. Bartenfield (1000chb385 on here) a visit to pick up my RCM-1 and give him his 5T (We worked out a trade), and today happened to be test day for his 2T22, so at 13:00 sharp, we set it off. To my understanding, this siren was originally installed somewhere in Texas. Maybe Jeb will know since he brought the siren back from wherever. it was made in 1979.

Siren starts at 0:36:

EDIT: Well, I screwed up the date. i meant to say 14, not 24

Is that running on a phase converter? That windup was painful.

I think it may be, but I am not 100% sure. He just asked me if I wanted to set it off at 13:00, and I basically said "Let's do this"

Sounds like he's driving it on a VFD. I think I could hear the windings singing away when he starts it up. There is a guy on YT that drove his 3 phase blower on a VFD and it made the same some sounds as it went from 1 to 50 Hz.

That distinctive high pitched buzzing is something I've heard coming from every motor I've worked on being driven by a VFD. That would be another idea for some people on here who would like artificial three phase. You can softly start it to keep the starting amps down without damaging the motor. Very unique paint job indeed!

Yes it's on a drive, a Lenze drive to be exact. The gradual rampup is due to the fact that a drive can only provide 150% of the max rated current. During a startup a motor can exceed 300% of the rating.

The hum is the DC ringing in the windings. You can make it less audible by changing the carrier frequency.

Its using an 8kHz carrier right now. Dealer says to change to 6 or 4 kHz with a shorter acceleration time to minimize the singing. I had thought the drive was making the sound until Brendan made the video. - ya learn something new every day -

Yeah the lower the carrier frequency the better, especially on old motors that don't have VFD rated insulation. Here is more on making old motors and VFDs live together: http://ecmweb.com/design/mating-new-var ... ing-motors

CB did you ever figure out how to setup the attack signal with the drive?
