Bethany, Oklahoma Siren Upgrade Finally Underway (Image Warning)

Fri Apr 03, 2015 2:40 am

(I've been meaning to post this earlier but our internet crapped out so I used my mobile hotspot on my phone. Don't tell mommy lolol)

Since I moved back to Oklahoma I've seen several news stories about malfunctioning sirens in Bethany that would go off in the middle of the night, and I've experienced a few malfunctions first hand at siren tests as well. They've been talking about upgrading their system for a while now. Yesterday, I drove by the Allertor near 30th and Rockwell and saw a glimpse of a 2001-130 sitting on the ground next to it. Last I heard, they're getting four, which I'd love to see how they plan on covering the weird north section that's quarter mile wide by like 2 miles long. Anyway, I did a quick U-turn (a little too quick..rubber was burnt LOL) and went by to see what was up. Sure enough, they were finishing up installing everything on the pole and waiting on the crane to raise it up. The fire chief happened to be there and remembered me from a previous phone conversation after I explained who I was. He said to leave some contact info and hopefully I will find out soon the fate of the old sirens. If nothing else, I'd love one of the 3T22's. (My best of best lucks would also bring me the P-15 lol) But of course, I'd love to see the sirens refurbished and put back in service. I'd do it myself if I had the right equipment and credentials. Anyway before I get too carried away, here is a video and some pics.

Video contains explicit material and a eye-rolling girlfriend.

Mods/Admin, maybe you could help with the huge images? I honestly have no idea how to make them smaller and I don't have flickr or anything.

I totally saw this coming unfortunately. In OKC area, if it's not Whelen, it's 2001. This will also be the last CD sirens I can hear from my house. The P-15 used to cut through like melted butter before they switched the wiring. That thing was so loud.

Better get ahold of them so some other city can get some good use out of them.

How so? The system was old and needed replaced. They'll fix a ton of coverage gaps in the process and make it easier to activate the system in case of an emergency.
Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right.

Like I said, I'll try my best to find out what the deal is but at this point there's not really much I can do.

They actually had their city boundaries pretty well saturated, it isn't that big of a place, but they do have a weird boundary. The real problem was the outdated technology that would work most of the time, and sporadic problems would come up causing a siren to be out for a few weeks. The 3T22's were the ones with the problems. Not to mention I'm pretty sure the entire system is landline operated, so that's probably a whole different system they have to maintain.

A new siren system was really their best choice since everyone around them already has the new stuff. Unfortunately for me, it's more of the same siren model that almost everyone within 100 miles is getting it seems.

Here's a map of the coverage for reference. The 2001's discovered the other day were the southernmost two locations.

It looks like a few small corners of the city aren't covered. Not too bad though!
