2001s in Winkler and Altona, MB

Sun Jun 28, 2015 3:09 am

This is actually pretty old news that I just discovered recently.

The city of Winkler, Manitoba (100 km southwest of Winnipeg) has two Federal 2001-130s, which were installed in 2013 after years of debate. One siren was installed in a greenspace near the Rec. Center on the northwest side of town, while the other was installed at Scotia Park on the southeast side of town. The sirens are radio-activated, and are controlled from the city's fire station. The siren is an all-hazards siren, but tornado warnings will likely be the most common reason for activation. I haven't been able to find much other information about the system (how long they sound for, what signal they sound in, etc.), but through some digging, I would presume they do a noon test either annual or semi-annually. Their last test was on May 8th of this year.

I also found out that there is a SRNB in Altona, a small town about 25 km southeast of Winkler. According to their website, the siren is also an all-hazard warning system, and sounds 4 minutes of wail in case of emergency. It also functions as a noon whistle.

Here is a pic of the 2001-130 at Scotia Park in Winkler. (pic isn't mine; it belongs to a local news agency)

Southern Manitoba is tornado country, so definitely a good investment.
Down to a Thunderbolt chopper, still a few goofy flashlight-siren combos, and a Model L.
