My first time seeing a thunderbolt 1003

Wed Jul 01, 2015 1:30 am

Hi guys, I'm slightly new to sirens and I've never seen an actual thunderbolt before and today I saw my first one and it happened to be a 1003! Here are some pictures, it was located at a fire dept. in Norfolk, New York.

Welcome aboard! I'm glad to have another New Yorker among us!
That's interesting, I knew there were a few 1003s up north, but not in Norfolk specifically. If you don't mind driving, there's a 1003 at Massena's fire department too!

Edit: might as well mention it, but the first time I ever saw a thunderbolt was driving down Watt St. in the city of Schenectady, NY (avatar pic) and I saw a black horn facing away from where we were. I had already been in the hobby for awhile, so I knew what it was. I was excited to see that there was a thunderbolt a stone's throw away from my house (they are uncommon here), but then I found out it was a jailbar and almost had a coronary . Long story short, that was the first time, but whenever I see one in person, even that same jailbar, I always get that rush for whatever reason.

Welcome aboard the USS Siren Board!

I remember the first time I saw a thunderbolt, this was probably in '00 or '01 (before we moved to Georgia from Alabama) We used to live about half a mile from one and I remember hearing it a couple of times and seeing it, I thought it was the funniest looking thing in the world back then. Then in 2011, my siren interest rebooted after I heard a thunderbolt go off (T'was test day!), and on memorial day 2013, I got my thunderbolt.

Haha the funny thing is I'm not actually from New York, I was up here to visit Clarkson University, but I'll be up here a lot if I get in!!

Sorry for the bump but it looks like I'm going to be spending the next 4 years up in Northern NY! Is there a siren map for the area? I know theres a 3T22 for the Philadelphia,NY Fire Dept, a Thunderbolt 1003 for Norfolk FD and a Whelen at the Potsdam FD.
