Sat Apr 14, 2007 10:32 pm

be a Major Disaster.
Hay wait why not Hook Up a fiew 500T Federals
or SD-10 in the area , I cant believe how deaf local officals
are to their citizens needs . And to think L. A. City has its
own Dept. of Water and Power IE : NO electrical Power
watthour meter needed, just a leased line from Tel-Co.
I missed this story Tues 4-10 so

Would many know what that siren warning means?
Many may go outside to check, (I would!) when staying inside may be the best action.
Seems like Reverse 911 would be the best notification.

I think there may be an electronic siren system already installed to warn of failure of the Van Norman Dam, but it isn't being tested and may be gone by now. It was installed in 1972 after the great Sylmar Earthquake which cracked the dam, causing a minor failure with a roaring torrent of water that went down Sepulveda Blvd. all the way to the Encino basin. Being the same location, I would think that the existing system, if still there on the water treatment/reservoir property, would double as a chlorine gas warning. I've never seen any sirens from Balboa or from the 405/I-5 interchange though. I think I read about that system in the Daily News Santa Clarita eition, maybe about 2 years ago.

I totally agree that they should resurrect the 500T's, and the other sirens downwind from the water plant and dam, and re-dedicate them for chlorine leaks and dam failure. Nobody talks about that dam, but if it completely fails, it will wipe out 100,000's of people between Van Nuys Blvd and Balboa

If the Dam Brakes after an earthquake ? How well can we expect

We all drown as our phones are ringing.

Precisely my observation! I even wrote a paragraph for the Los Angeles Daily News editorials section about reverse-911 vs. sirens in an earthquake.

Do post the snippet if you get published!

Anyway, it would be a very sensible idea to re-instate those sirens; but I think because the municipality wants the cheap way out (you have to factor in maintenance, repairs and inspection), they'd use Reverse-911; not a good idea.

It was in 2003... They only let you have 100 words. Here's a copy:

Yes; I think it's the biggest one among the reservoirs which supply water to the Los Angeles area. There was another big one in Chatsworth to the west, but they couldn't/didn't fix it after the Sylmar earthquake. Still sits empty today :(
