"New" 2001-SRN In Lee County, AL

Thu Jun 02, 2016 4:41 pm

This is something that I've been keeping an eye one for the last few months now. This is an old 2nd generation SRN that was installed last year in Phenix City, AL by Lee County's EMA on Summerville Rd. and Riverchase Dr. It is the closest siren in Lee County to Columbus and the closest one to me that tests on Wednesdays. The siren was originally one of 2 or 3 sirens that covered Auburn University's campus and the rest of the downtown area before being replaced with a system of 5 Whelen WPS 2904s. They were apparently the first 2001s that the county installed to replace, presumably, Thunderbolt 1000T/1003s. While they were in service they had some extra equipment added to them that was probably used by the campus to set them off resulting in a rather interesting FC setup with two boxes stacked on top of each other. They also had the battery boxes secured in a bracket of some sort that would keep the thieves out. Here are some links to them in Google StreetView of them while they were installed:

When the Whelen vendor removed them the county stored them away to eventually be relocated or replace a head that may have been damaged beyond the point of repair. It took them over a year to get this thing up and going. :| Here are some pictures I took of it before they completed the installation I took last year. The antenna and everything has been fixed up now. I couldn't get pictures of it after the test, had somewhere to be afterwards.
