This is one of two sirens left from Atlanta, Georgia's old siren system, which existed roughly from 1942 to 1989. The only three sirens left in Atlanta proper are this SD-10, a Giant Voice system (probably Altec Lansing) in Buckhead, and a Thunderbolt 1003 on a federal building near the CNN Center. The system consisted of Thunderbolts, Model 5s, Mobil Directos, Model Ds on light posts within the city, and SD-10s, of course with various additions. The sirens came down when the 1980s came to an end, most presumed scrapped, however some were sold off, A model 5 and SD-10s. Some of the SD-10s went to Cobb County and one going to the town of Oxford, Georgia, in Newton County, where it remains in service today. This particular siren is located at Holly Rd. and Andrews St. As you can probably infer, the siren has been offline since the end of the Cold War. This siren now stands quietly, a silent reminder of a time long past.
