in the videos of people escaping, there were no sirens sounding. I asked if there were any sirens in the area and they said they weren't, and after this they are pushing to try and get warning sirens and R911.[/quote]

@Zarlog Oh yeah? Then what's that on the pole? I saw this in Gatlinburg in 2012.

We know the city has sirens. They never test them on a solid schedule, and the terrain probably makes the sirens hard to hear once you leave from the center of the town into the more wooded areas. Couple these two things together and you end up with a situations where some folks don't know that a system exists. Even if they were to set them off for the fire it probably wouldn't be effective, especially with the conditions at the time with the smoke and winds.

UPDATE: I found a picture online showing one of the Gatlinburg sirens after the fire. I reposted it on Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/130072196 ... ed-public/

Well that sure is a shame. Looks like I'll have to check the rest out while I'm down there.

Ouch. :(
I wonder what happened to it though, how did it get destroyed when the pole didn't get burned?

Also, the pic below shows the Youtube comment I made that they replied to.

I have an unhealthy obsession with mini sirens.

I'm not sure why you're going off and dissing the emergency management like that. First of all, the sirens are controlled by the city of Gatlinburg Fire Department, and they were obviously occupied. Second, the sirens' main use is for flooding, so perhaps no one quite thought of using them during the fires.

I still fully believe that they were set off at some point though.
