Here is an article on how weather warnings have evolved from early times that mentions sirens. I actually just used this for a paper and presentation in my English 150 class. The problem may be that the link attached may not work for anyone else, as I got it through my University's database...in that case, I'll also leave the title for those that want to find a copy for themselves on Google Scholar (or to those who have the database)
