Sirens in Malaysia

Tue Mar 06, 2018 5:17 pm

As of the title, my country also features a siren system, mainly for tsunami warnings, as of the devastating 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami.

Map, mostly WIP :

https://drive.google.com/open?id=191oqg ... sp=sharing

A brief description about the nationwide system :
The siren system is controlled by Angkatan Pertahanan Awam Malaysia (APM, or in English, Civil Defense of Malaysia) and mainly consist of Electronic Sirens. Most of the Mechanical Sirens from the British Colonial Era are now removed or used for Non-Civil Defense use, such as marking the time of Iftar, as of the Kuala Kangsar Police HQ's Carter / Gents / Castle Castings on their roof under a 'shed'.

About the map, either reply to my post or PM me to tell me more locations.

Short Information about Pulau Pinang
Pulau Pinang (Penang Island) is a state in northwest Malaysia comprising mainland Seberang Perai and Penang Island. On the island, the state capital of George Town is home to landmarks such as colonial Fort Cornwallis, the ornate Chinese clan house Khoo Kongsi and the Kapitan Keling Mosque, all testaments to centuries of foreign influence. To the west, a funicular ascends Penang Hill, with its trails, flower gardens and panoramic views.

Penang Island is also famous for its food, thanks to the Mamak (Indian Muslims who came to Malaysia some time ago, active since 1990s) stalls mainly selling Nasi Kandar and Pasembur.

Famous Food Attractions :

1. GANI Pasembur
One of the best Pasembur in Penang.

3, Medan Renong, Padang Kota Lama, Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah, George Town, 10200 Georgetown, Pulau Pinang

2. Restoran Liyaqatali (Known as Nasi Beratur; Rough Translation, Queue-Up Rice)
Yep, you need to line up when it's near 10:00PM. It's opened after 10, and serves delicious dishes, including the Nasi Kandar. Don't get confused between the one before 10, that's Nasi Masjid. NM occupies the one under the zinc roofing, while NB occupies both, shoplot and zinc roofing.

I have photos of that exact siren on my computer somewhere. I haven't heard it before, but I have seen it in real life too.

However, I suggest that the food and description of Penang are saved for the Off Topic forum.

What I'm trying to mean is the sides once you arrive there. Of course arriving somewhere far away only to record a siren is totally a waste.

Anyways, I'm making a map on sirens installed in Malaysia. So far only four of them I've discovered. Siren locations will be added from time to time.

There's bunch'o videos about it sounding, but all in Malay, the Northern slang. Try entering the keyword "siren kuala kangsar" and watch the uppermost videos. Here's some translations if you didn't understand Malay :

Balai Polis = Police Station
Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah (IPD) = District Police Headquarters
Buka Puasa / Berbuka Puasa = Iftar

Adding to how I discovered the siren, I double-checked it through Google's Street View.

Can't believe we have such a siren in Malaysia. What is it used for?

At first used to warn on air raids, wars and attacks during the British Colonial Era, now used to mark the Iftar time during the Fasting Month, Ramadhan. This year's Ramadhan is on 17th May until 14th June.

As for short, the Iftar time is during the Dusk, which is during the time Maghrib. You'll hear an Azan (The one that starts with Allahu Akbar (Allah the Almighty), 4 times and ends with Lailahailallah (There is No God Exept Allah)) during that time.

As a gentle reminder, the siren is almost nowhere to be seen from the ground, but is under a roof. I strongly recommend bringing a drone together.

I've circled the probable object peeking out to be the siren.
