Repowered siren List

Sun Dec 27, 2020 10:39 pm

This a topic listing and discussing repowered sirens. Repowering refers to rebuilding a piece of equipment (such as a siren) with a different engine/motor/controller.

One such example is the repowered Federal Electric Type B at Shandon Ohio. (credit to 4j25). Note the new motor mounted in the box next to the siren.

I also learned the 1212 prototype near my grandparents got repowered with a UV controller. (credit to 4j25) Note the new black drivers.

Bump. Just found out about this and I have a couple contributions.
There's this town in the midwest that didn't have enough money to get three phase run to this 3t22 they were given, so they split it into two belt driven sirens and a model 2 was installed at the edge of town.

My siren (located in Dublin, MD. Go to the BB&T for the best ambiance.) is a 1961 W.S. Darley Model 7TT that had a ruined motor. I didn't have enough money to restore the old motor and convert it to single phase, nor did I have enough to buy a new Dayton. So, I got an old air compressor motor and belt drove it. The old 3hp needs a replacement because it struggles to drive the siren and overheats after about 20 seconds at the max. Looking to get at least a 5.

Delavan, WI has a STH-10 that they got a new motor for. I believe that the motor is currently malfunctioning.

The Massie Township Thunderbolt 1000T near Harveysburg, Ohio had a 5/6 chopper but was internally damaged beyond repair. It now has a 4/5 chopper and a new chopper motor since the original motor was in bad shape. It was not properly refurbished when it was installed by Federal Field Services.

In Clermont County Ohio, there is a Thunderbolt 1000T on Jenny Lind Road near Amelia that had its 5/6 chopper replaced with a 4/5 chopper and a new chopper motor. Before the chopper and motor were replaced, it had bad pitch issues.

Where is the pic of that well pump bolt?
Sirens may not be sexy, but they sure work.

Found it! This was located in Melrose, New York. The original chopper motor burned out, so they put a well pump motor on.

That T-bolt modification is positively nuts! Towns or FDs on a budget I guess! I would've tried to shim a modern motor in there for a chopper instead of the classic open Model 2 design. Probably would've been cheaper to buy a used Model 2 motor to stick in there instead!

I've considered replacing the original 5 HP 3-phase motor in my old Model 5 with a modern single-phase motor for operability and efficiency.

If you consider sirens no longer in service, Haswell Colorado deserves a mention. One side of the chopper was removed, a pulley fitted, and another motor rigged up to it. Looks to be a M10 based on a different GSV angle.

This unit was replaced by a SD-10, which was later replaced by a 3v8-H.

Never did it. But I considered finding a STh /STL 10 and putting a 10-12 HP lawn mower engine on it. Figured I would locate one that was 3 phase or single phase with a bad motor.

It blows my mind that such sloppy re-powers exist. All they're missing is duct tape! LOL
