coded sirens are ordinary sirens with one of 2 things. either a solenoid that controls a valve that cuts airflow to the chopper or from the chopper(federal signal 3t22, thunderbolt 1003, klaxon CS-8, coded P-15?) or a brake on the motor (some sterlings, various other models).
some of them have a valve controlled by the spinning of the chopper that repeatedly mechanically opens and closes when the siren is running. this was only employed on smaller sirens. specifically the yamaha music siren uses coding dampers to play musical tones.
