How do you get coverage circles in Google maps?

Mon Apr 22, 2024 10:37 pm

I've always wanted a map that has siren coverage circles in it. I know that there are a lot of tutorials out there for circles, but all of them use the same websites or other maps, and the questions on google and other websites don't help either. The websites that are out there are really confusing to use, even the ones that have built in maps, and their circle tools are really annoying to get right. I don't think Google Earth Pro has any tools for it, and I don't know of any other tools to help make a map.

Is there any other ways to make coverage circles in a Google Map? I know it's possible, because I've seen other maps that do use them.

Pro tip... use the measuring tool to draw circles!

Google Earth Pro's drawing tools do not include an easy way to draw accurate circles. But, the ruler/measuring tool does let you measure circular areas and save them as KML, so you can do the following to draw a circle:

Open measuring tool (ruler icon on toolbar, or Tools menu > Ruler)
In Ruler window, select the "Circle" tab
Select the units you want to measure the radius in (eg: Kilometers, Miles)
Click (click, don't drag) on the map at the center point of your circle (eg: siren radius)
Move your mouse until the circle radius is the distance you want (eg: ?km/?mi)
Click the map again to complete the circle
In the Ruler window, click the "Save" button
In the "New Path" window which appears, give it a name and click "Ok" button
Find your circle in the Places panel!

I do remember seeing this online, but I tried it and didn't understand how it worked. Thanks! I still think it's weird that it's not officially built in to Google maps, it does seem like a useful tool to have.
